How To Make a GIF in Adobe Photoshop

Hey everyone! This is a concise and easy tutorial on how to make a GIF in Adobe Photoshop.

A part of my work as a Photographer revolves around social media influencers. It is quite obvious that everyone wants their content to be unique and attractive.

Pictures are the usual content but a GIF is so much more attractive to look at. First of all, to create a GIF, you need to shoot accordingly.

How to shoot pictures for a GIF

To make a GIF later in post processing, I would suggest taking burst shots of your subject doing small movements.

For example, it can be a subtle hair flip, swinging the handbag back and forth, tilting their head to sides or even making their skirt their fly a little.

Make sure that the movement isn’t too much because it’ll be harder to get sharper pictures for each frame. Small movements look great too in the final result.

So, now that you’ve shot burst pictures, let’s get into Photoshop.

Editing process in Adobe Photoshop

Complete the color grading and other basic tones editing on your burst shots before starting the part of animation editing in Photoshop. Make sure that the images are cropped (if you crop them), are of the same dimensions.

Set the delay time

At the bottom of each picture, there is a number displayed which denotes the delay in seconds. The higher the delay, the more time gap between two pictures.

I would suggest to set the delay to 0.5 seconds. That is what I personally use, you can choose which ever works the best for you.

Click on the ‘Play button’ to see your GIF in action and change delay time to your taste.

Finally, to export it as a GIF, go to File > Export > Export As > GIF. If you want to post this on Instagram, export it as a video instead.
