7 Breathtaking Lakes in Himachal Pradesh

How much do you know about the lakes in Himachal Pradesh?

The beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh, most known for being a popular summer vacation spot, also hosts many breathtaking lakes.

The shimmering lakes surrounded by lofty hills will enchant any traveller.

There are more than 25 lakes in Himachal Pradesh. They freeze in winter and become reflective like glass during the summer season.

Let’s have a look at the 7 most beautiful lakes in Himachal Pradesh.

Lakes in Himachal Pradesh that you should consider visiting

Chandratal Lake in Spiti

I saw the Chandratal Lake with my own eyes and couldn’t believe how surreal it looked.

It was one of the stops on my 7-day Spiti trip and is one of the most unique lakes in Himachal Pradesh.

Chandratal Lake is at an altitude of 4,250 meters. Its name translates to ‘Moon Lake’ because of its appearance.

The lake has a crescent shape like a moon.

In Hindu mythology, Chandratal is the celestial spot where Indra, the revered King of Gods, descended on his divine chariot.

Legend has it that this divine descent occurred to transport Yudhishthira, the eldest among the Pandavas, in his mortal form to Swarga, symbolizing heaven.

Adding to the mystique, local beliefs suggest that the tranquil shores of Chandratal attract fairies who grace the lake with their presence during the night.

Parashar Lake in Mandi

Parashar Lake is a hidden gem at an altitude of 2,730 meters, surrounded by thick forests.

The best months to explore this idyllic destination are from May to June and September to November.

During these periods, the weather is generally pleasant, and the landscape comes alive with blooming flowers and lush greenery.

In the summer months of May and June, Parashar Lake welcomes visitors with open arms.

The weather is mild, making it ideal for trekking and enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The clear skies offer a perfect backdrop for the reflection of the Dhauladhar Range on the lake’s surface, creating a breathtaking sight.

As the monsoon bids farewell, the landscape around Parashar Lake undergoes a magical transformation.

The months of September to November are characterized by crisp air and clear skies, making it an excellent time for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.

Winter Serenity

While winter brings a blanket of snow to Parashar Lake, making it a picturesque wonderland, this season comes with its own set of challenges.

The lake is usually frozen, and the surrounding area experiences heavy snowfall, making access difficult. Therefore, it’s advisable to plan a visit during the more accessible and visually appealing months of summer and post-monsoon.

Suraj Tal or Tso Kamtsi in Lahaul & Spiti

Suraj Tal is known by two other names – Tso Kamtsi and Surya Tal.

It’s an 800-meter-long lake perched at an elevation of 4,950 meters above sea level.

Situated near the Baralacha Pass, famously known as the meeting point of roads leading to Spiti, Ladakh, and Zanskar, Suraj Tal Lake holds a special place.

The pass itself is often referred to as “the pass with crossroads on the summit.”

The name “Suraj Tal” is a combination of two Hindi words – ‘Suraj,’ meaning Sun, and ‘Tal,’ meaning lake, earning it the moniker “lake of the Sun God.”

This lake is born from the streams of the Bhaga River, defining the Bhaga Valley.

In the summer, the water flows down from the surrounding mountains and nearby glaciers, creating a captivating and divine sight in the Bhaga Valley.

The convergence of two rivers, Bhaga River and Tandi River, adds to the enchantment of the valley.

Near Suraj Tal, the small yet significant Deepak Lake beckons travellers.
