Almost every time a reel of mine goes viral, I get comments and DMs from people asking me tips on how to make better reels, how to edit attractive reels, what I shoot on, what I edit on, etc.
So, here I am spilling all of the secrets, tips, and tricks that can help you improve your reels game.
But before we delve into it, I want to make it super clear that these tips don’t guarantee you go viral.
Reels go viral because of a variety of reasons. You have to be consistent with posting content that is relatable to a majority of your audience.
You need to be active on the platform and engage with other creators who are in the same niche as yours.
The things we talk about in this post are good practices that you can do to make reels that are attractive and engaging.

Sharing my secrets: Make better reels that are aesthetic
Shoot at the right exposure
This is a very small tip but helps you immensely to make better reels for Instagram.
When you’re shooting a video with your phone for reels, tap on the screen and pull down the brightness till the brightest part in your video is properly exposed.
What does being properly exposed mean?
The sky should not be blown out and appear white.
This also makes your video looks more aesthetic.

There should be a sequence
For Instagram reels that are about you visiting a place or going out with your friends, there should be a sequence.
Not sure what videos you should be recording?
Record 3-5 seconds of every step that comes along. For example, getting ready for stepping out, getting into the cab/metro, reaching your destination, stepping out of the uber/metro, spotting your friend and saying hi/hugging them, etc.
A 5-second recording is more than enough.
Put these clips in the order they were recorded in the final reel. This will make your reel look like it’s been thoroughly planned out and creates interest to keep watching and see what’s in the next sequence.
Make better reels by compiling clips that tell a story or evoke an emotion.
Here’s an example, this is a reel I posted about a shoot day:
Make small stable camera movements
Be very patient while recording videos. Stop walking and stand firmly. Hold the phone with both of your hands.
Try to introduce small camera movements.
Move the phone from the sky to the ground slowly, taking a panning shot from left to right, reveal the scene slowly by moving the phone from behind a tree to the side, etc.
The ultimate tip is to record a video of a subject by keeping it centered and revolving around it for 3-4 seconds. For this one, you will have to be in your most stable form.

Create a reel on a specific theme
Make better reels by being mindful of what kind of reel you want to make. Choose a specific theme. It can be a month’s dump of videos and photos, nostalgic moments from daily life, your morning routine, a day in your life, how you spent your Sunday, a collection of videos of beautiful skies, etc.
Phew! Lots of ideas.
Write something about the theme on the video while editing it in the Instagram app.
A short quote, a two-word title, or anything that matches the vibe of the video works great.
You can either go simple and classic by using one font to write the whole text or use a combination of different fonts.
