Set the Video Quality

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and set the Camera Capture to Most Compatible.
Turn on Apple Prores format for the highest-quality of video recording.
This just gives you the option to shoot in Prores while your camera is open, it doesn’t automatically make every video recorded a Prores video.
Use the Prores format only if you’re a videographer who knows how to edit and work with the LOG footage.
These videos will be very heavy. I wouldn’t recommend a content creator who isn’t familiar with grading LOG footage to use this.
But if you’re a pro videographer, it will be a game changer since you get a lot room of colorgrade the videos.
Here’s an example of how I colorgraded Prores videos shot on my iPhone 17 Pro Max:
Make colorgrading easier with LUTs. To achieve a similar look like in the videos above, checkout my own set of LUTs which you can use even on your phone – Cinematic Video LUTs for VN, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro
Note: In order to shoot 4k ProRes videos on your iPhone you need a fast external SSD with Type-C port connected to your iPhone.
Since the videos recorded are very heavy, iPhone needs a fast external SSD to store those videos.
I use a SSD by Sandisk, it works pretty smoothly:
- SanDisk 1TB Creator Phone SSD – Up to 1,000 MB/s – Compatible with MagSafe
- SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD 1050MB/s R, 1000MB/s W,Upto 2 Meter Drop Protection with IP55 Water/dust Resistance, HW Encryption, PC,MAC & TypeC

Video Recording Settings
In the same Camera section, scroll down to Record Video and set it to 1080p HD at 60fps.
I know you might think 4K 60fps is the best settings but believe me 1080p works just fine for Instagram reels.
60fps is better tha 30fps because your video will be more stabilised.
Also, scroll down a little and turn ON Enhanced Stabilisation, turn OFF HDR Video, turn ON Lock White Balance.
Use the action mode to stabilise videos even more.
Quick tip 1: You might have noticed flickering lights in your videos when there are LED lights around. To fix this, simply shoot the video in 24fps or 25fps and the flicker will go away.
Quick tip 2: When you’re recording a video and you zoom in and out, sometimes the camera glitches, takes a few seconds to regain focus.
To fix this, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video > & turn ON Lock Camera.

Video Shooting Tips No One Told You About
Tip #1
If you shoot videos of yourself talking, use the back camera instead of the front camera.
There’s a drastic difference in the video quality of the front and the back camera.
In order to do this, you need a tripod, here are some great options to check out:
- EUCOS 62″ Phone Tripod, Tripod for iPhone & Selfie Stick with Remote, Extendable Cell Phone Stand
- DJI Osmo Mobile 7P Gimbal Stabilizer
- Zhiyun Smooth Q4 Gimbal Stabilizer (I use this)
- DIGITEKยฎ (DTR 550 LW) 67 Inch Foldable Tripod Stand with Phone Holder & 360ยฐ Ball Head
Use screen mirroring feature on iPhone to make shooting with the back camera easier. I screen mirror on my Mac to see the frame.

Tip #2

While shooting the video, pull down the exposure slightly below 0 to capture more details. This one little thing makes a whole lot of difference that people don’t know about.
Tip #3
For talking videos, good quality audio is extremely important.
You need a good wireless mic that you can easily carry and use outdoors without any hassle.
The wireless mic should have noise-cancellation feature so that you don’t have to spend time removing unwanted sounds while editing.
Check out these great wireless mic options in the market:
- Budget option: Portronics Dash 7 Omnidirectional Type C Wireless Microphone
- Mid-level option: Hollyland Wireless Magnetic Mini Microphone: Lark A1 Mini Duo Wireless Mic
- Pro option: Hollyland Lark M2 Wireless Microphone (I use this one)
