Create Your Own Animated Doodles For Free On iPhone

That title isn’t a clickbait. I have just found a way to create animated doodles/effects right on an iPhone. You can create animated doodles for free and use them in your Instagram reels, YouTube Shorts, or even YouTube long-form videos.

We will be using 3 tools for this – a video editing app, a screen recorder on your iPhone, and the pre-installed Notes app.

Any video editing app that lets you add PIP/overlay works.

I recommend using either Inshot, VN, or Capcut. They’re both great editing apps that have many features available in their free version.

Have the idea & inspiration in your mind

Since we will be using our iPhones, the animated doodle can’t be too complex.

It has to be simple and easy to edit on an iPhone screen.

Let’s say, you need to highlight something in your video, and for that, you need an oval doodle that is drawn over that item when you’re talking about it in the video.

You can doodle cute little shapes like stars, hearts, smiley faces, etc. Honestly, depends on how good of an artist you are.

And then we can add an extra oomph factor by making your hand-drawn doodles animate in videos.

Let’s start doodling!

Open the Notes app on your iPhone to draw what will become the – animated doodle

Open the Notes app on your iPhone and put your iPhone in dark mode.

Open a new note and choose any of the 6 brushes available.

I usually prefer the crayon and the highlighter.

Start recording your screen after you’ve chosen the brush using which you want to create doodles.

When the recording starts, doodle in one flow. Please make sure there are no long breaks while you’re drawing.

Start with small shapes or just lines and scribbles to get the hang of it.

The whole movement of your brush while drawing will be the animated doodle.

When you’re done, stop recording.

Open Inshot App

I use Inshot mostly, you can open the video in any video editing app you use.

*That has the option to overlay videos

Open the video on which you want to add the animated doodle.

Click on the PIP tool on the menu in Inshot and then select the screen recording video of the doodle you made.

Crop the video so that only the area of the doodle is visible and trim the video to remove the gaps before you start drawing after you finish.

Change the blend mode to screen. This will remove the black area of the video and reveal only the animated doodle.

Pretty cool, right?

Take it up a notch by adding animation to your overlay animated doodle and make it look more interesting.

NOTE: You can also add static doodles on your videos by taking a screenshot and changing its blend mode to screen in the same manner.

Here’s an example of this effect I did by writing text using the brushes,
