How to plan 3 days in Udaipur – city of lakes
I went on a 3-day trip to Udaipur from Delhi which was absolute bliss! It was the 4th city I visited in the state of Rajasthan after Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur.
The first thing I did was book the flight tickets through MakeMyTrip well in advance to get the best deal possible. The process is quite a smooth right from finding the cheapest flights to getting the boarding pass right on WhatsApp & mail.
You can also choose to go via train but the train duration is 12 hours+ which is a bit too long. And I personally don’t like long travel times.
If you’re planning a trip to Udaipur, I would suggest that the first thing that you should do is check out the prices of flights from your city to Udaipur for the next 2 months.
Money spent on travel on trips constitutes a major portion of a trip’s budget. So, try to save as much as possible in it.

Some important things to remember
- If your hotel is in the Old City, the taxis can only go upto Chaandpol. After that, in order to reach your hotel you will have to take an auto or walk if the hotel is closeby. The roads are a bit steep so you might not be able to walk a lot carrying all the luggage.
- Preferably, shop from local markets rather than shops situated around popular places like the City Palace. Everything will be priced thrice more than their usual rate. Ask your autowala and they’ll take you to more local and authentic shops.
- When booking an Uber from the Maharana Pratap Singh Airport to your hotel, you have to pay an additional fee of ₹30 to the driver.
- I wouldn’t recommend making a hotel booking that has breakfast included in it. Most hotels in Udaipur charge an extra buck for including breakfast. You can save some money there and have local breakfast outside. There are plenty of small shops around that have a variety of things available.
- For City Palace, its better to visit the place early morning to avoid the crowd.
- Try to go for boating/speed boating either in the morning or in the evening to watch the sunset on the lake.
Udaipur trip from Delhi: Where to go & When
I had created an itinerary well in advance for my 3-day Udaipur trip. But that changed as soon as I landed in Udaipur.
It’s important to be open to suggestions for the itinerary from the locals like the auto walas and your hotel manager or receptionist.
Even though I had checked the places I wanted to see on Google Maps, their distance from the hotel and between each other, the locals would know better about where you should go first and when.
We talked to local auto wallas around our hotel and booked two autos, at Rs. 800 each for the entire day. They picked us up from the hotel, took us to 3-4 different places during the day, and dropped us back at the hotel at night.
This works better than booking an Uber or an individual auto every time you commute from one place to another.
Most of the good hotels are located in the Old City, around Lake Pichola. You can ask around and find bike rental shops near you if you like driving to places on your pace.
Bike rental can cost somewhere around ₹400-500 per day.
Allow me to share my itinerary with you so that you don’t miss anything on your trip to Udaipur!
Day 1 in Udaipur
1. Maharana Pratap Smarak
On the first day of my 3 days in Udaipur, Maharana Pratap Smarak was the first place I went to.
Maharana Pratap Smarak is on the Fateh Sagar road and is situated on a hilltop. The entry ticket costs ₹100 which includes the entry for the museum.
You’ll get a beautiful view of the city of lakes from the top and if the weather is right, you’ll enjoy the wind in your hair.
It has a museum as well which has beautiful works of art and text that explain the history behind it.
I went to Udaipur in March 2022, it was at the onset of the spring season. But still, it was a bit hot.
Do have a glass of fresh lime soda from the small shop at the entrance, on the right side of the stairs that lead to the Maharana Pratap Smarak.
It’s absolutely essential to keep yourself hydrated while on the go, and even better if you drink lemonade for that extra pump of energy!
2. Speed boating at Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar Lake is on the way when you go to Maharana Pratap Smarak. I went for speed boating on the way back from Maharana Pratap Smarak so that by the time we reach the lake, the sunlight is a little less harsh.
Speed boating costs ₹236 per person and lasts for about 10 minutes at max. Wear a lot of sunscreen for this!
And make sure to remove things that can fly off such as loose earrings, hats, etc.
I shot the picture above using my GoPro Hero 8 with a waterproof floating hand grip which comes in very handy in sports activities on trips.
3. Saheliyon ki bari
Saheliyon Ki Bari is a garden on the banks of the Fateh Sagar Lake. It is well maintained and was full of beautiful flowers when I went as it was the spring season.
The entry fee is ₹10 for Indians and ₹50 for foreigners.
I took a guide to understand the history of the place better. A guide charges ₹300.
Saheliyon Ki Bari was built by Maharana Sangram Singh for 48 royal ladies. It was built from 1710 to 1734.
It is said that it was designed by King Sangram Singh himself and gifted to his queen so that she has a place to relax and stroll with her maids.

4. Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
The entry tickets in palaces and forts in Rajasthan have suddenly been increased a lot!
It cost us ₹540 for the entry tickets for 6 people and an additional ₹570 for a taxi to take us from the entrance gate up to the top of the hill where the palace is.
The entrance point is the same for both Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace and the Biological Park. I didn’t visit the park since I was short on time and wanted to spot the sunset from the top of the palace.
You can’t reach the hilltop on foot as it is almost a 7km trek of steep roads. I saw some people walking and exhausted right after starting out.
Absolutely don’t think about walking to the Monsoon Palace.
Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace is built in 1887-1884, on the Aravalli hilltop, by Maharana Sajjan Singh of the Mewar Dynasty. From the top of the palace, you will see a breathtaking view of the entire Lake Fateh Sagar and the rest of the city.
Why is it named the Monsoon Palace?
Because Maharana Sajjan Singh built the palace primarily to watch the monsoon clouds nad his ancestral home, Chittorgarh.
It’s a beautiful place to see the sunset from (see the picture above). Entry closes around 5 PM but if you’re already inside, you can stay a bit longer before leaving.

5. Dinner at Tribute Restaurant
The Tribute restaurant is a beautiful place to dine at. If you’re not going in weather that is pleasant during the day, visit Tribute at night for a dinner.
I went here for dinner on my first day in Udaipur and guess what? I came back for dinner the next day too.
Even before I saw the menu and tasted the food, I was in love with the place.
It has a beautiful sitting place that faces Rang Sagar Lake. You can see the city light’s reflection in the water as you enjoy your meal.
Not to forget, there is a huge Amla tree that is decorated with led lights. You can get a table just below the tree for a one-of-a-kind experience.
The staff is courteous and caters to your queries kindly. Don’t miss this restaurant to have a memorable dinner with your loved ones.
Day 2 in Udaipur
Before leaving for the day, I went to have breakfast in the local market and the autowala took me to a shop (The Egg World opposite La Pino’s Pizza) that was quite famous for its various kinds of eggs.
It was run by Jay Kumar, a former participant of Masterchef India.
And you know me, my mornings are incomplete without eggs!
I ordered a Tandoori omelet and it was loaded with cheese and their magic sauce. I strongly recommend trying it out for breakfast or a quick snack in the evening.
1. Karni Mata Temple
Karni Mata Temple is a Hindu temple of Karni Mata from Bikaner. You have to take a ropeway to reach the temple. It cost ₹570 for 6 people, including entry and ropeway ride to-and-fro.
When you come down from the temple there is a floor that has a small cafe, VR games, fish pedicure for just ₹150-200.
The top of the temple offers a panoramic view of the whole city that looks like this:
2. Boating in Lake Pichola
You can’t afford to miss boating at Lake Pichola, the most popular lake in Udaipur.
Boating at Lake Pichola is a slow one when compared to the speed boating at Fateh Sagar which is more of adventurous activity.
On the boat ride, you will get a beautiful view of the City Palace, Jagmandir, and more as you make around in the lake.
It costs ₹165 per person for a local boat and more for a private boat. The local one is sufficient enough since the goal of the boat ride is to see the city mainly.
3. Lunch at Padmini Restaurant
Padmini Restaurant is on the top floor of Hotel Padmini Palace in Udaipur. I went there for a lunch with the family and it didn’t disappoint.
We ordered a Rajasthani thali, Chana Masala, Gattey ki sabzi, Kadhi, and Jeera rice. They were all scrumptious except the Kadhi that could’ve been better.
My personal favorites were Chana Masala and Gattey ki sabzi.
Delicious food served quick and hot. Service might be a bit slow if you go around 3-4:00 PM as the staff would be occupied servicing the hotel below.
But nevertheless, it’s a great place to have a fulfilling meal.
4. City Palace & Museum
The entry fee for City Palace in Udaipur is ₹300 per person. It will easily take you a minimum of 2 hours to see the entire palace. It’s huge!
The entry ticket is a bit on the higher side but it’s a palace that can’t be missed on your trip of 3 days in Udaipur.
There are numerous paintings and artifacts in the museum that make teleport you to the era of kings and queens.
Day 3 in Udaipur
1. Moved to Aurika Hotel & Resort in Udaipur, Luxury by Lemon Tree Hotels
Deluxe Suite!
Swimming pool and heated Jacuzzi
On the last day of my 3 days in Udaipur, I moved to Aurika Resort for a relaxed day inside the property itself.
It’s a beautiful property situated a bit outside the city area since it’s spread across 95 acres. It has 3 blocks which are built in such a way that each room has a panoramic view of the Udaipur city.
I even spotted Aurika right from the top of the Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace! (see the picture below)
All of the photos used above have been shot on the OnePlus 9 Pro, GoPro Hero 8 & Sony A7iii with a 28-70mm lens.
I had a flight back to Delhi on the 4th day so didn’t visit any places that day and spent my time during the day at Aurika after checkout.
For lunch, I went to Panna Villas restaurant in Panna Villas Palace.
