How To Monetize A YouTube Channel

If you have a YouTube Channel and you haven’t started earning from it yet, one question must have surely crossed your mind. How to get ads for your YouTube Channel?

Requirements for monetizing a YouTube Channel

1,000 Subscribers

To join the YouTube Partner Program you should have 1,000 subscribers on your channel. Once you hit this milestone, one requirement will be ticked off the list. Moving on to the next…

Watch time of 4,000 hours

The second condition is on how many hours have people spent on watching your YouTube videos. You need 4,000 hours of watch time on your content over the last 12 months.

Keep in mind that these 4,000 watch hours will be counted only for the previous 12 months. If your channel in total has 4,000 watch hours but not in the past 12 months, it won’t be valid.

When you delete a video, those hours will be reduced from the channel. Unlisted videos and live streams are counted in the total.

If you are enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program and then your yearly watch hours falls below 4,000 hours, YouTube might remove you from the program. Not always. But it has the power to do so.

Your content should comply with the policies and guidelines of YouTube

YouTube takes copyrights very seriously. You shouldn’t be using copyrighted material such as the music of other artists without their consent. If you do so, it can get your channel demonetized or rejected from the YouTube Partner Program.

Here are some YouTube channels you can explore to get copyright free music for your videos,

  1. Audio Library – Music for Content Creators
  2. No Copyright Sounds
  3. LuKremBo – This is a recent find. The music collection is quite aesthetic. Do check this one out.
  4. Audio Library Plus – Official Releases
  5. Vlog No Copyright Music

Your content should provide people with some value. YouTube says if most of your content is reused content and you’re not doing something new of your own, you won’t be eligible to monetize your YouTube Channel.

People who work hard and create their own content are rewarded. That is the spirit of the YouTube Partner Program.

You might see some channels which are monetized although they post reused and duplicate content most of the time. Sometimes such channels pass the review by mistake.

But they will definitely be caught and their channel will be demonetized. So don’t get tempted to post such content when you see others doing the same.

You should have an Adsense account

When you want to monetize a YouTube channel, you need a medium through which you’ll get paid.

YouTube pays you through an Adsense account. If you have one already, then you can link it to your YouTube channel. One Adsense account can be connected with multiple channels.

If you don’t have one, you will get the link to create one while you’re applying for you the YouTube Partner Program.

How to check your progress

To see how many requirements you have completed, click on the logo of your channel on the top right corner. Go to YouTube Studio.

On the left-hand side menu, click on monetization to see your progress. On the same screen, there will be a learn more button. It will explain to you what you need in a detailed manner.

Review Process

Once you are eligible and you’ve applied for the program, your application will be put in a queue. Reviewers will analyse your channel and see if it meets all the policies.

The typical review duration is about a month after you meet the threshold. Sometimes the wait can be more than a month.

This can happen when the number of applications goes up, system issues etc. You can’t speed up your application. The applications are processed in the order in which they’re received.

What if you get rejected?

If your application gets rejected, YouTube will give you some feedback on why it was so. But it doesn’t pinpoint the problem or which video was the reason you didn’t get approved.

The only option is to go through your channel yourself and trying to find what’s wrong. You can re-apply to monetize a YouTube Channel in 30 days time.

There is a dedicated support page with advice on what you should do if you are rejected from the YouTube Partner Program, and you’ll find it here.
