Do you want to start a blog but haven’t come around to actually creating one because you’re doubtful about the perfect niche for your blog?
Your blog’s niche plays a very important, perhaps the most important role in determining how great your blogging journey can be.
There are plenty of things you should think about before choosing a niche, it should be profitable, not too generic, should not be a topic that will become irrelevant in the near future.
Most bloggers quit midway because they struggle to get enough traffic and monetize their blog in order to keep it running.
You can be the most dedicated person on the planet and the blog still might not be successful if you don’t build it in the right way.
And in building your blog, the very first step is to decide your niche, which we’re going to talk about in-depth in this blog post.
Table Of Contents
First things first, understanding what a niche is
Your blog’s niche means a topic or a set of topics that your blog posts will be about.
It is important to select a niche before starting your blog because a lot of things depend on the niche you select.
The possibilities of you making money through the blog, the design & layout of the blog that matches the niche you’re writing on, the branding specifics like the title of the blog, your color palette, etc.
Also, if you decide to include your niche in your domain name, you have to be extra sure of it. Because the domain name isn’t something you can go changing around.
I personally wouldn’t recommend adding words related to your niche in the domain name when you’re not 100% sure about the type of content you will be posting in the future.
For instance, my blog’s domain name is garimashares.com. It just means that Garima shares her thoughts, it doesn’t restrict me from posting about only a particular niche.
It is totally up to you and your interests. You can have either one niche or a set of niches for your blog. For me, they are Photography, Instagram & Life.
Most common mistakes that people make when selecting a niche
1. Choosing a niche that is too broad
Don’t choose a niche for your blog that is too broad. Narrow it down to reduce your competition.
If you’re thinking of choosing social media as your niche, think about all that comes under it- different social media platforms, marketing strategy for each of them, content creation for them, etc.
Instead of choosing social media, select the platforms you want to focus on. It can be either one or two.
2. Depending only on Adsense for income
Adsense is the most popular way to monetize a blog but it is not the best and only one. In Google Adsense, you are paid per view and the amount that you are paid depends on the country from which the majority of your traffic is.
You can optimize and get traffic from specific countries to earn more, practice section-targeting, etc.
But before that, you should research more about the different ways of monetizing that is possible for various niches, such as:
- Affiliate
- Direct advertising
- Online courses
3. Selecting a niche in a hurry to start blogging ASAP
Nothing worthwhile comes easy. You need to give it time. Spend at least 2-3 days learning about the different niches before selecting the final niche for your blog.
This is absolutely essential to make your blog a profitable business.
4. Not being open to change
When you have begun your blogging journey and the niche is becoming a bit too saturated, don’t shy away from switching it up.
Also, if you are no longer interested in the niche or have found a new interest, feel free to create a new blog focussed solely on that niche.
The experience and knowledge you have gained from your existing blog can help boost the growth of the new blog.
Don’t be afraid of starting a new blog from scratch, if the niche really interests you.
5. Choosing a profitable niche that you’ve no interest in
If you select a niche that is profitable but you’re not genuinely interested in writing about it, blogging is going to be hard for you.
Because it takes quite some time for the money to start coming in. Till that time comes, your passion and interest in the niche is the only thing that will keep you going.
And if you are not into the niche at all, the fire inside you might burn out.
Enjoy blogging about the things you love and are passionate about. Writing a blog post should come naturally to you.
How To Choose A Niche For Your Blog
Checklist
- You should be genuinely interested in the niche
- Should have multiple monetizing opportunities
- Use Google Trends to check its popularity
- Try a micro niche for less competition and more expertise
Your niche should be a topic that you’ve had an interest in for a while.
It can be a hobby that can be turned into a blog and eventually a source of income. Grab a notebook and a pen. Make a list of all the things that you like to read, watch and learn about the most.
After you’ve made this list, filter it out by seeing which niches are profitable and have lesser competition.
Use Google Trends to type in and search your ‘niche’. Check the graph of people’s interest and number of searches made in the past year.
Here’s an example for the search term- Cryptocurrency
Pick a micro niche because major niches are saturated and highly competitive. But be mindful that it is still of interest to people.
